The Marginal Product of Capital∗

چکیده

Whether or not the marginal product of capital (MPK) differs across countries is a question that keeps coming up in discussions of comparative economic development and patterns of capital flows. Using easily accessible macroeconomic data we find that MPKs are remarkably similar across countries. Hence, there is no prima facie support for the view that international credit frictions play a major role in preventing capital flows from rich to poor countries. Lower capital ratios in these countries are instead attributable to lower endowments of complementary factors and lower efficiency, as well as to lower prices of output goods relative to capital. We also show that properly accounting for the share of income accruing to reproducible capital is critical to reach these conclusions. One implication of our findings is that increased aid flows to developing countries will not significantly increase these countries’ capital stocks and incomes. ( JEL codes: E22, O11, O16, O41.

An Analysis the Effect of Capital Taxation on Allocation of Resources: A Dynamic Equilibrium Model Approach

Abstract T he return of capital is fundamental to the intertemporal allocation of resources by changing the consumption behavior and capital accumulation over time. Taxation on return of capital increases the marginal product of capital, meaning that capital stock is lower than when capital is not taxed, which results decreased growth and welfare in steady state. This pape...

The (mis)allocation of capital

Is capital allocated so that its marginal product is equated to the market interest rate? Is the marginal product of capital equalized across its alternative uses. This paper attempts to answer both of these questions using data from India, and concludes that both these standard properties fail by a wide margin.

Mankiw’s attempted resurrection of marginal productivity theory

Part 1 of this paper (http://www.paecon.net/PAEReview/issue59/Moseley59.pdf) argued that the marginal productivity theory of distribution has fundamental and insoluble logical problems: (1) the aggregate production function is not a legitimate concept, because capital consists of diverse buildings and equipment that cannot be reasonably aggregated into a total quantity for the economy as a whol...

Identifying Human Capital Externalities: Theory with an Application to US Cities

Identification of the strength of human capital externalities at the aggregate level is still not fully understood. The existing method may yield positive or negative externalities even if wages reflect marginal social products. We propose an approach that yields positive average human capital externalities if and only if the marginal social product of workers with above-average human capital e...

Interest and the Marginal Product of Capital: Böhm-Bawerk versus Samuelson

It is quite common to associate the equilibrium rate of interest with the marginal product of capital. However, not all economists have endorsed this practice, and indeed many have challenged the explanation of interest according to marginal principles. In this paper I offer a resolution to this dispute by first agreeing with the critics of mainstream models, but then demonstrating that the "ju...

Macroeconomic Implications of Variation in the Workweek of Capital
